New Table & TV

On Sunday afternoon we got quite the treat- a new table courtesy of Mick and Erin. They are in the process of moving somewhere smaller and very kindly offered the table to us. It is a gorgeous rustic oak, that seats 4 and can also be expanded to seat 8.

This weekend we also purchase a TV, DVD player, telephone, stereo and some other gadgets to set up our internet. A you can imagine there has been very little to do at 26A for the last 3 months!! We have become quite the experts at reading books and at looking at each other!

We are of course ecstatic, our new flat finally is starting to feel like a home, and it will be lovely to finally invite people over for dinner - without asking to BYO floor cushion!

Obviously, we cannot wait until our container arrvies with the rest of our stuff in August.

Gay Pride!

This weekend was Gay Pride in New York. The sun was shining and it was a wonderful day to celebrate life, community and people coming together.
















The Gay Pride March in held every year towards the end of June to commemorate the Stonewall riots. The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village. They are noted as the first instance in American history when people in the homosexual community fought back against a government that persecuted sexual minorities, and they have become the defining event that marked the start of the gay rights movement around the world.


In recent years , the March has broadened to include recognition of the fight against AIDS and to remember those we have lost to the illness, violence and neglect.

The Stonewall Hotel in Sydney is named in honour of this very moment in history, as an enduring struggle of gay rights issues and conflicts.





















Gay Pride march starts at Central park on Fifth Ave and walks all the way down to Greenwich Village. It is considered a March rather than Parade as the fight continues for equal rights amongst for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community.

















We had a great time supporting everyone in the Gay Pride March, and managed to find Walter in the crowd for some street-side dancing and shenanigans!

Michael Jackson

You cannot ignore the deep sorrow and sadness involved with losing a true icon of musical genius, Michael Jackson.

Say what you want, blame it on the boogie even, but you cant deny his influence on music and the joy it bought to so many.

Days like these put it all in perspective, be thankful for your health, happiness, friends and family.

Keep the music alive and play your favourite King of Pop tune till the player skips!

Yum Cha!

Sunday morning presented a great opportunity to head out for some authentic yum cha!! David's friend from work Ken, suggested a fantastic "dim sum" place in Chinatown, so we grabbed Ken, Bridget and Walter, and headed downtown.

We eagerly arrived at the Golden Unicorn, and after a short 20 min wait we were all seated with chopsticks poised!

The Golden Unicorn did not disappoint and we made a dent on the dumpling quota, all for the grand price of $17 per head.
















It's funny how all yum cha venues tend to look the same, for a moment I felt like we were at Kan Fook in Sydney, however the decor being far less glamorous, bought us right back to reality.

We had a great time and one of the funniest moment was the discovery of the "Engrish" style sign below..........hmmmmm

Opening Night at the BAM!

Last night we attended the Opening Night of Alvin Ailey's American Dance Theatre at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre was founded by Alvin Ailey in 1957 and primarily consisted of African American dancers only. He has been credited with popularizing modern dance and revolutionizing African-American participation in the arts. The Theatre plays a crucial social role using the beauty and humanity of the African American heritage and other cultures to unite people of all races, ages and backgrounds. Alvin Ailey passed away in 1989 and personally chose Judith Jamson to become the Artistic Director, who were were able to meet over champagne afterwards!

The evening comprised of 3 performances, each different, passionate, vibrant and beautifully executed.

Hymn, a tribute to Alvin Ailey choreographed by Judith Jamison, a tapestry of dance and voice recordings that created picture-biography of Ailey's loving legacy. The original performance received an Emmy in 1999.

Suite Otis, a tribute to the late Otis Reading was matched with famous tunes such as Try a Little Tenderness, I've Been Loving You Too Long and even (I Can't Get) No Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones.

Revelations, Ailey's most popular and critically acclaim piece of work, premiered and choreographed in 1960, it is a masterpiece that has been seen by more people around the work that any other work of dance. It draws on Ailey's experience growing up in the south of Texas, the blues, spiritual & gospel music and is a cultural expression for the African American community.

Truly an amazing evening!

Pam's Last Night

After visiting us last month, Pam and Lindsay headed for Washington DC and a cruise to the Bahamas.

Looking very tanned and refreshed, amd perhaps a little shopped out, we caught up with them back in NYC on Friday before they left back to Oz.

Fun Facts about June

Well its June already and I can't believe how quickly the year has gone! June marks the beginning of Summer in the USA so I have a feeling things are about to get busy - and hot!

Here are a few fun facts I found out about June for everyone:
